Newport Pentecostal Church of God History
Written/Submitted by Larry J. Jordan

The beginnings of the Pentecostal Holiness Church, friends met at their homes until they found a suitable building on Bryant Street in Newport.  The first pastor was Bro. Rogers from Indiana. He ministered from 1952 until 1954 as the pastor of the Pentecostal Holiness Church.  Sometime in 1954, the church joined the Pentecostal Church of God, South Central District.  Bro. Rogers remained the pastor until 1955 or 1956.

The church moved from Bryant Street in 1957 to 201 Ray St. and they used a tent to worship in until the new building was erected.  Sister Crawford was the minister for a short while.  Pastor Walton W. Crowder, from the Walnut Ridge area, was the first minister in the new church building on 201 Ray St. from 1957 until 1960.  Bro. Crowder resigned in 1960 and moved his family to Memphis, TN.  Bro. E.P. Dougan Sr., from Van Buren, AR, was voted in as our new pastor in 1960 until 1961.  Bro. Rose was voted in 1961 until 1962. He resigned I am not sure where he went from here.  Bro. Crowder moved back to this area in 1962 and was voted back in as pastor until he was killed in an auto accident in July of 1965.  Bro. James Boren, from Crossett, AR, was our next pastor. He was voted in sometime in the fall of 1965.  He resigned 1966 after a revival with Bro. Parks who was pastor at Russellville, AR.  Bro. Boren was then voted in at Russellville Pentecostal Church of God.  Bro. Parks was voted in as our new pastor in 1966 and resigned in 1967.  Bro. Clyde Hudson was our next pastor voted in 1967 until he resigned in 1968.  Bro. Jimmy Dinwiddie was voted in 1968 until 1971.  Bro. Charles Cross, from Springfield, MO, was our next pastor in 1971 until 1973.  Bro. Thomas Patterson was voted in as new pastor 1973 until 1983.  Bro. E. P. Dougan Jr, was our next pastor voted in 1983 until 1984.  Bro. Robert Duncan was our pastor from 1984 until 2002. Sister Duncan passed away 2001 and Bro. Duncan resigned and moved to Oklahoma City, OK in 2002.  Bro. Paul De Haan was voted in as new pastor in 2002 until 2004.  Bro. Larry Estes was our next pastor voted in 2004 until 2006.  Bro. Loyd Ferrell was our next pastor voted in 2007 until 2008.  Bro. Jay Cox was voted in as new pastor in 2008 until present day.

Our Church has a long history of producing ministers into the work of the Lord.  To name a few that I can remember there must be some I have forgotten.  Bro. Thomas Patterson, Bro. Jimmy Dinwiddie, Bro. Leon Tidwell, Bro. Roy Sherman, Bro. Anthony Patterson, Bro. Jason James, and many more.

We have experienced many soul saving revivals through the years. Early years we had Bro. Depriest, Bro. Hollis Hopkins, Sister Linda Williams, Bro. Morrison, and many, many more...too numerous to name.

I hope this will help, and I trust this information is accurate. I was about 6 when I attended my first service in 1952.
